The AS/NZS 61439 superseded the AS/NZS 3439 series in 2016 with a 5-year transition period that expired in May 2021. The new standards are now in place that mandates the use of AS/NZS 61439 series for switchboard assemblies.
AS/NZS 61439 is a series of standards for low voltage switchgear and control gear assemblies for the Australian and New Zealand market. The standards are based on the International IEC version but will assist the need for transferability between Australia and international suppliers. Advancements in technology such as new circuit breaker designs has also been a driving force behind the introduction of a new standard.
What are the changes?
It is now essential that every assembly meets its defined design requirements. The testing and verification process requirements are key to increasing the safety of the buildings and premises housing switchboards but also to the safety of workers such as electricians who are working on the electrical infrastructure.
Vigorous testing in a laboratory is required to align the safety standards to the requirements of the environment planned for install. Short circuit tests, arc faults, IP ratings and temperature rise are all subject to testing. This testing helps determine the level of suitability for the conditions in which it is about to be installed. This ensures a higher level of confidence for manufacturers and much higher level of safety for electricians.
As part of the new standard the introduction of ‘alternative and equivalent’ methods of design verification has replaced the categories of “type-tested assemblies (TTA)” or “partially type-tested assemblies (PTTA)”.
