Changes to AS4024 bring it into line with international standards.

June 30th, 2014 saw the release of several updates to the Machine Safety AS4024.x specification to bring it into line with the most recent international standards. ISO13849.1:2006 has been adopted as AS/NZs4024.1503:2014 to include a raft of functional safety methods that have seen widespread utilitisation throughout the process control industry for some time.

Plant, production and operations safety should always be the highest priority for any company owner. Many of the modern machines that are purchased pre-made from a company can often seem to have ample safety systems built into them and often the implications from both a legislative and personal perspective are overlooked. This is especially pertinent when a machine is imported from overseas where safety standards and legislation can differ greatly from ours.

A reminder about functional safety.

Functional safety is essentially a system or systems that are put in place to prevent injury, death or damage to an individual or the environment either directly, or directly as a result of normal working practice. It is an end-to-end solution that treats functional components or systems both individually and as part of the whole system.

How does this affect me?

Whenever a new machine is added to an existing production line, it is important to assess that machine both as a standalone item, and as a part of the whole system. These assessments enable baseline safety issues to be addressed while using the item in its existing configuration, but also for understanding safety implications if changes are made to production. If proper assessments aren’t completed by certified safety experts, there is risk of liability in the case of a safety incident.
